Sustainability and Awareness
We are no heroes, experts in sustainable designs or climate change, but we do have a passion for sustainable lifestyles, creating for good, and are constantly exploring ways to be better for future generations. Integrating our conscious lifestyle and mindset into our creations is a journey of constant learning and trying stuff out. We don’t have all the answers yet, but we do know we have the power to create change.
What do we mean when we talking about sustainability. At North & Beyond we want to acknowledge that we want to focus on all three areas of sustainability, environmental, social, and economic.
It’s important that we share the same approach, that the environment is the key to it all. The environment is what keeps our society and economy running and something we believe needs to value more. But how do you value clean water, fresh air, or the empowering feeling of climbing a mountain top?
*Sustainable materials choices
To us, it means to choose the best available. Learn about the materials out there and chose the material best for the future. Prioritized is recycled material. At North & Beyond we found that the most sustainable option is to work with materials that already exist. Creating less waste on this planet is an action close to the heart.
Developments in areas for more environmentally friendly materials are coming up now all the time, and we’re not closing any doors but all the artists are asked to check the options out there to motivate their choice of material. They are asked to understand the options through a sustainable perspective. Since we work with different kinds of techniques, materials, and expressions our list of good and bad options can be pages long. We help each other and discuss a lot, and use science-based investigations as a base so we together can motivate why we chose certain material.
As mentioned recycled materials and creating less waste is a production way we highly encourage at North & Beyond. And not only that, we motivate our artists to think about the end of life for their own designs. How can they integrate a zero waste mission into their design process? North & Beyond wants to inspire to find ways of a totally circular production.
*The purpose of creating awareness
Art can have a tremendous amount of power to affect people in different ways. At North & Beyond we want to explore how we can use art as a power to create awareness of global questions. With some of the arts, crafts, and exhibitions on the platform we want to say something to the world, and hopefully arouse a thought or start a discussion.
*Small and local scale production
Our main focus is to create with our own minds and hands. Most of the arts and craft at North & Beyond is created in Åre with some support from Swedish print shops. In some rare cases where artists work with producers from other countries, it has to be proven to be producers with environmental and social standards that support sustainable development. If collaboration can create work opportunities and generate a positive impact and create change towards a more fair and sustainable world it might not be such a bad idea. We assure you that in those rare cases we work with transparency and we always make our decisions after evaluating options. We’ll happily answer questions you might have regarding this.
